Backcountry Skiing

True backcountry riding normally begins somewhere other than a ski area and involves only human-powered ascent.

Backcountry skiing is one of the most sought-after winter activities in Gulmarg — a skier’s dream. The unbeaten tracks, traversing lofty mountains, and sliding down on your skis is an elite experience.

For a beginner, backcountry skiing begins in areas outside the control and patrol of the ski resort. Depending on your expertise, you can aim higher into the far reaches and unbeaten slopes of Gulmarg as far and wide as you like.

Backcountry skiing regions

Gondola Top: a massive 1,500m vertical drop. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest-operating cable cars in the world, lets you descend through vast alpine bowls and perfectly aligned trees directly into the meadows of Gulmarg. An experienced guide is necessary, as backcountry terrain here is not patrolled or avalanche-controlled.

Gondola Mid-station: about 400 meters above Gulmarg town, operating in almost all weather conditions. Runs make for half-day trips down to Drung Valley and a further 10–15km to the closest town, Tangmarg.

Baba Reshi Trees: a unique, exhilarating experience two ways — rent a taxi to the top and ski 400–500m of vertical runs, or hike up Monkey Hill (250–300m) behind town and ski down as many times as your body allows.

Triple Peak: Kashmir Heliski flies you up to the nearby Triple Peak for a full day tour, requiring 2–3 hours of skinning before dropping into Drung Valley and on to Tangmarg.
