The offer

Why Snowboarding Is the Perfect Winter Sport to Try

Snowboarding combines freedom, flow, and adventure, feeling more like surfing or skateboarding than traditional skiing. Nothing compares to the thrill of gliding down a mountain with both feet locked onto a single board.

While the first few days' practice requires more focus and physical effort to perfect your stance and balance, snowboarding has an immensely rewarding payoff. Once edge transitions click, you learn faster than in almost any other winter sport. You quickly move from basic edge slips to carving smooth, effortless turns across real mountain slopes.

Our 7-day course guides both first-time snowboarders and early-stage riders who want to overcome edge catches and traverse intermediate terrain, taking you step-by-step through every milestone. Guided by certified local mountain instructors, you'll build solid muscle memory on easy base slopes before advancing to high-alpine runs at Gondola Phase 1 (3,050m) and chairlift-accessed terrain.

Day by day

Your course overview

Training runs daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, followed by hotel transfers and evening social sessions.

  1. Day 1

    Arrival, equipment hire, and briefing

Equipment setup, orientation, and flat-ground fundamentals (no lifts today so you build board awareness safely at your own pace).

Once you arrive in Gulmarg (or land at Srinagar Airport), our private driver transfers you to our dedicated equipment center. Our snowboard technicians custom-fit your setup based on your height, weight, boot size, and riding stance.

Following your fitting, join our instructors for a 2-hour orientation covering gear mechanics, regular vs. goofy stance evaluation, binding setup, alpine safety guidelines, and slope etiquette. In the afternoon, head to the flat nursery area for your first snow practice. Learn to skate with one foot strapped in, maintain balance, and practice safely falling and standing back up.

    • Snowboard and soft snowboarding boots
    • Certified safety helmet and anti-fog goggles
    • Waterproof jacket, snowboard pants, and insulated gloves
  2. Day 2

    Heel-edge control and side-slipping

Practicing the heel edge, speed control, and safe stopping.

Day 2 focuses on helping you develop a better heel edge, the basic skill for speed control and braking in snowboarding. Your instructor provides regular supervised demos and individual coaching throughout the day to build your confidence on the snow.

    • 9:45 AM: Driver pickup from your accommodation and transfer to the base slopes.
    • 10:00 AM: Meet your instructor and begin practical edge drills.
    • Keep proper posture (knees flexed, chest up, weight centered)
    • Side-slip on heels down base slopes
    • Regulate speed using heel-edge pressure
    • Perfect the falling leaf exercise to traverse left and right across the slope on your heel edge
    • Apply safe emergency braking and stop with more control
  3. Day 3

Toe-edge control and first edge transitions

Transitioning to the toe edge is usually the most challenging mental hurdle for beginners, but it unlocks greater board control. By the end of Day 3, you'll be able to control your board confidently on both edges, which sets you up for linked turns tomorrow.

    • 9:45 AM: Driver pickup from your hotel for transfer to the slopes.
    • 10:00 AM: Brief review of Day 2 heel-edge skills followed by toe-edge training.
    • Practicing toe-edge stance, balance, and body posture
    • Toe-side side-slipping and speed regulation
    • Practicing the falling leaf exercise on your toe edge
    • Moving smoothly between heel and toe edges while traversing
    • Controlling speed comfortably on both edges
  4. Day 4

Gondola Phase 1 debut (3,050m) and first linked turns

Advance to high-alpine terrain on Gulmarg's famous 4 km mountain run. Accompanied by your senior instructor, you'll apply your edge control on longer, wider alpine descents. Complete multiple full descents during the day based on weather and lift operations.

    • 9:45 AM: Pickup and transfer at Gulmarg Gondola base station.
    • 10:00 AM: Ascend to Gondola Phase 1 (Kongdoori) for high-alpine riding.
    • Loading and unloading gondolas safely with your board
    • Initiating your first heel-to-toe and toe-to-heel turns
    • Managing speed and rhythm over longer, diverse gradients
    • Correcting weight distribution through turns
  5. Day 5

Linking S-turns, rhythm, and speed regulation

Day 5 focuses on turning individual edge transitions into continuous, fluid S-turns across longer slopes. By the end of Day 5, you'll be linking smooth, controlled turns down intermediate slopes with confidence and flow.

    • 9:45 AM: Hotel pickup and transfer to the slopes.
    • 10:00 AM: Meet your instructor to refine turning fluidity and rhythm.
    • Making short and medium-radius S-turns
    • Reducing edge catches during turn transitions
    • Maintaining steady momentum and speed control on steeper pitches
    • Developing fluid upper-body posture and dynamic edge engagement
  6. Day 6

Chairlift progression to moderately difficult terrain

Advance to chairlift-accessed slopes, opening up longer, steeper, and more complex terrain. By the end of Day 6, you'll be comfortably navigating chairlifts and riding intermediate mountain slopes at higher speeds with complete edge control.

    • 9:45 AM: Driver pickup and transfer to the slopes.
    • 10:00 AM: Transition to the Mary's Shoulder Chairlift terrain.
    • Learning how to board and offboard chairlifts safely
    • Riding steeper intermediate slopes with dynamic turn control
    • Understanding terrain shifts and choosing safe riding trails
    • Intro to light off-piste and natural un-groomed snow
  7. Day 7

    Self-practice, media capture, and departure

Following breakfast, collect your full gear setup alongside an action camera to document your final day on the slopes.

    • Morning: Enjoy independent riding on the groomed slopes you trained on throughout the week. Put your new skills into practice at your own pace while capturing action footage of your runs.
    • Late afternoon: Return your equipment to our equipment center.
    • Transfer: Get to Srinagar International Airport or your preferred address.

Before you arrive

How to physically prepare

  • Snowboarding is an active full-body sport that engages your core, quads, calves, and stabilizer muscles. We recommend preparing your body for 1–2 weeks beforehand. Practice core exercises such as squats, lunges, plank holds, leg stretches, and light cardio.
  • Lift access on days 1–3: During the first three days of the course, training takes place on easy base nursery slopes without lift access. Walking up moderate gradients with your board helps build essential leg stamina, core strength, edge awareness, and board control before you progress to lift-assisted terrain on Day 4.

FAQs

Want to know more about this experience?

Snowboarding has a more challenging learning curve in the first 2 to 3 days because both feet are attached to a single board, which requires precise balance and edge control. However, once you learn how to handle heel and toe edges, moving up to intermediate turning and powder riding is often faster than skiing!
